Washington Commanders Apply For Sportsbook License

The Washington Commanders have formally applied for a sports betting license in Maryland.
The goal is to host an in-stadium sportsbook at FedEx Field.
The Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Commission will be voting on potential sportsbooks next week.

SUMMERFIELD, Md. – The Washington Commanders have applied for a betting license to launch an in-stadium sportsbook.

The sportsbook would go live at FedEx Field in Maryland. The Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Commission is set to review applications, including the Commanders, next week.

Commanders Sportsbook Incoming

The application was filed under the group name Maryland Stadium Sub, LLC. According to reports, the group’s address is listed as 1600 FedEx Way indicating that the company is in fact the Washington Commanders.

The commission will review three applications next week. Should they approve these applicants, they will be sent to the Sports Wagering and Application Commission (SWAC) for final approval. SWAC meets on August 24.

The Commanders stadium sportsbook is guaranteed under state law. It is one of 11 locations that by regulations are guaranteed access to local sports betting.

The timeline of the launch has not been set, but the sportsbook could go live during the 2022 NFL season should the approvals move quickly.

In Stadium Sportsbook Trend Continues

The Commanders will be one of a few NFL teams aiming to host in stadium sportsbooks. The Arizona Cardinals have already been granted a sports betting license in Arizona and the Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals have both applied for stadium licenses.

The growing trend of in-stadium sportsbooks is something that is likely to continue as the current sportsbooks show success.

The Commanders close proximity to Washington DC and Virginia as well as Maryland locals gives way to a lot of overlapping fanbases across multiple markets. This is sure to attract several sports betting fans throughout the NFL season.
