Ohio Sports Betting Sees January 2023 Launch Date

The regulated sports betting market in Ohio is set to go live on January 1, 2023.
This would come over a year after lawmakers signed sports betting into law.

COLUMBUS, Ohio. – The Ohio regulated sports betting market now has a launch date set for January 1, 2023. The Ohio Casino Control Commission made the announcement at a conference Wednesday morning.

This launch would come just over a year after Governor Mark DeWine signed HB 29 into law, officially kicking off the Ohio sports betting market.

Regulators anticipate over 3,000 potential betting applications, indicating the market will need the extra time to sort out each potential operator.

HB 29 would allow for both retail sportsbooks and regulated online sportsbooks in the Buckeye State. The regulations allow for up to 46 online operators in Ohio.

The market is looking to go live with as many operators as possible. Matt Schuler, the Ohio Casino Control Commission Executive Director says this will be the “”largest ever simultaneous launch of sports betting in the United States.”

The Ohio sports betting market is expected to be a major one, as multiple big name sportsbooks have already curated partnerships with popular local teams.

Both Caesars Sportsbook and Fubo Sports have partnered with the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA and in the NFL the Cleveland Browns have partnered with Bally’s.

Ohio’s strong local fandom is expected to carry the market with both professional teams and legendary collegiate programs.

What’s The Final Steps?

Ohio’s regulations have already gone through the public option phase and set its rules. Now lawmakers need to sift through online operators and determine who will be granted market access.

This is standard for all legal sports betting markets when they aim to launch. In the coming months, each application will be overviewed by the commission.

Local Ohio residents are only a few months away from seeing their regulated market in full swing.
